“According to the information I have, the plane landed further than usual & further than normal for this type of aircraft,” the head of the commission investigating the emergency, Real Levasseur, told reporters. History
In 1985, the Airbus development department considered the possibility of creating a 250-seat long-haul aircraft under the working designation TA 11. Soon it was decided to simultaneously develop a four-engine A340 & a twin-engine under the designation TA 9 (later became the A330 model). Parallel design meant reducing the cost of developing a new line of aircraft. Germany fully supported the plans of Airbus & the national carrier Lufthansa volunteered to become the starting customer for the new aircraft.
